Important Things You Should Know About Etched Glassware

The art of developing an artistic image on a piece of glass is generally referred to as glass etching. This signifies developing an art on the surface of glass by applying abrasive, acidic or caustic substances. Glass etching is the roughening or abrading on a piece of glass in particular areas to create a design. It is a technique to generate "frosted" art on a piece of glass. Using this technique, you can also carve an image deep into the glass.
It is important to note that one can also use the technique of shaded design which is very much similar to airbrushing that is etched in the glass to remain forever. There are many people who are showing their deep interest in etched glass because of its practical application and beauty.
Etched glassware is widely used for windows and aesthetics or glass wall covering. The best thing with etched glass is that it allows in the light even as it wraps the wall or glass window by providing privacy.
This technique is being used from a very long period of time, but it gains popularity after the invention of mold-etch process, in which the particular art is etched openly into the mold, so that every casted piece gets emerged with the image which is available on the surface of the glass.

The Technique of Glass Etching is generally done in two important ways:

1. Abrasive Sandblasting: It is a very general technique for formulating the outlines in glassware by leaving a "frosted" appearance on the glass. When the high pressure of air is mixed with the abrasive material it generally cuts away the surface of the glass so that the effect can be seen. Some of the most common techniques which are involved in this process are as follows:
  • Combination Technique: With this technique it becomes possible to offer the best sophisticated etching for strength and to avoid the weaknesses. It gives beautiful results when combined with other glass techniques like glass blowing, stained glass, etc.
  • Surface Etching: In this technique, etching is done on the surface of the glass.
  • Shading: The elements in the given art are blasted to several shades, rather than only the white color which is produced during the surface etching.
  • Carving: This technique deals with curve or blast of the glass which gives a three dimensional etching.
2. Chemical Etching: This is the second technique which is used for glass etching. In this technique, a chemical process is used instead of sandblasting. Generally, the glass etching cream is available at the stores of art supply which have fluoride compounds, like hydrogen fluoride, sodium fluoride. The fluoridation of the glass gives the opaque and rough qualities of the frosted glass. The best thing with this technique is that it is very simple and easy and does not require any apparatus for abrasive etching.
Glass etching is an elegant and beautiful technique of making a graphic design on the smooth surface of the glass. You can also use this technique on textured glass. It is permanent and so there is no need to worry about its quality. Carved and etched glassware are nowadays very popular and you can easily see them everywhere in homes, restaurants, theaters and hotels.
The glass etching products are generally used for architectures such as doors, windows or doors in homes, office building, restaurants and hotels. These days, they are getting very popular and are even used in gun cabinets, table tops, dining tables, fireplace screens, room dividers, etc.
