- Primary: It is not any kind of damage. It is rather a dysfunction in the left side of the brain that is better known as the cerebral cortex. This is a more serious kind of dysfunction as people suffering from it are mostly likely to not be able to read above fourth grade. They may also suffer from the problem of reading and writing all their life. It is also genetic and hence is likely to be passed on.
- Secondary: This is a result of hormonal development during the early stage of the fetus. It however tend to diminish as the child grows up.
- Visual: In this type of dysfunction, the sufferer finds difficulty to write symbols correctly in terms of sequence. They may face the problem of reversals of numbers and letters.
- Auditory: It encompasses difficulty with sounds of letters or words. Victims of such a disorder often find letters and groups of letters jumbled up.
- Dysgraphia: It is basically a problem with a child where the child finds difficulty in using a pencil and making correct marks on a paper.

- Developmental SLDs: Caused as a result of biological problems, it is usually genetic. It is caused due to dysfunction in the brain at various levels from the prenatal stage and thereby continues to childhood development.
- Acquired SLDs: Caused as a result of damages caused to the brain during the prenatal stage or after that.
Several studies have their own estimated categories as to how dyslexia can be divided. According to Ingram (1964), it is divided into three divisions:
- Visuospatial problems: where the individual faces problems to recognize letters or groups of letters; they identify through their shape and size. They tend to get confused with reversible letters (d; p; b)
- Speech and sound problems: problems with the spoken language; difficulty in forming sentences; speech sound for particular letters; etc.
- Difficulties in terms of correlating.

- Johnson and Myklebust (1967): Visual and Auditory. Ii involves standardized reading tests as well as tests for reading diagnosis.
- Bateman’s analysis of Visual and Auditory deficits (1968): The work bases on the Illinois test of Psycho Linguistic Abilities. It categorizes into three divisions: (a) proper visual memory yet poor auditory skills; (b) proper auditory memory but poor visual memory; (c) both are poor.
- Smith’s three patterns that bases on WISC as well as WAIS tests (1970): Uses intelligence tests.
