  1. A simple way is to try writing alphabets with toes. These movements will slowly but surely help ankles to get back their functionality.
  2. Towel stretching is something that one might have seen many sports people do as a part of warm up or in case of any injury too. This is done by sitting on the ground and then stretching out the leg that is hurt. Then loop a towel around the toes and pull towards the chest. Hold this way for half a minute, release and then repeat for a few more times.
  3. Calf stretching is another very good step. In fact all types of stretching before a strenuous sport or activity will make sure that ankles are ready for it. It improves flexibility. However, if any stretching results in any kind of abnormal pain, then it is better to stop immediately.
  4. In addition to above there are some movements that are targeted at strengthening muscles and not really at helping one to recover from any injury. These movements involve strengthening not only joints but also muscles of the calf and leg.
  5. Balance improvement exercises are also an integral part of rehab. In fact, most injuries to ankles are a result of an inadequate balancing capacity.
If a person has a career that involves physical or strenuous work, then it is advisable to do all types of strengthening, stretching and balancing exercises after a consultation with a doctor to prevent any injuries to ankles that carry body weight whenever one is standing.
