A Glimpse into the World of Tools and Tool Making

Man has been able to create some of the most amazing products and has accomplished some of the greatest feats that till a few years ago seemed impossible. A large credit goes to the tools used in achieving these accomplishments. The makers of these tools deserve applause too for their precision, creativity and craftsmanship. All the tool makers are highly qualified people with an eye for detail that puts them in absolutely different league from ordinary mortals.

Manufacturing Industry

The manufacturing industry uses countless number of tools such as cutting machines, sewing machines, grinders, polishing machines and a whole lot of others. All of these are still used, but now a new breed of machines has also stepped in; that which is numerically controlled and is more precise. These are the computer operated machines and also those such as lathes. There are times when a completely new and unique product drawing may be placed in front of tool makers who then have to use their problem solving skills and creativity and ingenuity in designing such tools that will make it easy and fast to produce the product. Now, once machines and tools are designed; the person using them must have the right qualification and training to be able to produce the product in question.

Tool Makers – Protection and Skills

The procedure of tool making can at times be quite dangerous and the person must wear the appropriate gear for protection glove, overall, and certain ear plugs that protect against loud noises become mandatory while working with or developing the tools for a particular industry. Technology is evolving on a daily basis and it becomes important for the toolmaker to constantly keep himself up to date with the changes and integrate modern technology into his work for better results.

Importance of Tool Makers

As mentioned above; no manufacturing activity can possibly occur without using tools and hence on this regard the importance of tool makers is quite evident. Tools are required in all manufacturing industries; whether it is pens, apparels, electronics, car parts, utensils and the list can go on endlessly. It is very rare that two different industries use the same tool and thus these are very industry specific. Although the action may be the same; the material used in making the tool or the size and capacity will differ. For example, a cutting machine for marbles and a cutting machine for fabric are entirely different but they are essentially doing the same job!

Who Can Make Tools?

A conceptual understanding of the problem presented is the first quality needed. Thereafter, only a person who has the ability to then think logically to reach the end can proceed further. In the process there will also be the need to understand technical drawings and putting together various parts in the right manner and then to interpret the data to understand why certain tool deign will work and why some will not. Today, computer technology has definitely made the task of tool making quite easy; however the qualities and skill needed of tool maker will remain the same. An eye for detail, precision and a reverence towards perfection are some of the core qualities needed of a tool maker that will never change.
