The Process of Wrapping the Muay Thai Hand Wraps

Before training or fighting, one needs to properly wrap both hands. This is the right way for protecting them from any kind of damage. Most practitioners usually use firm elastic bands along with Velcro to protect the bones and muscles from probable damage. When in Muay Thai, one usually conducts a basic Muay Thai hand wrap, usually folding the band into a pad, and then the user winds the rest of the material around their wrist and between their fingers. This is a very comfortable wrap that enables you to opt for the fight with great safety and increases your strength and precision.

The Right Way to Tie Muay Thai Hand Wraps

1. Holding the loop of the thumb against the palm and then wrap the fingers six times - You need to position the loop of the thumb in such a way that it aligns with the tip of the index finger just a little above the knuckle. At the time of wrapping, you have to spread the fingers. Squeezing both together would end up causing the wrap to become very tight and restrictive. Several fighters end up rolling their wraps in an inside-out pattern. For doing this, you necessarily need to unroll the wrap and then roll this back up tightly along with the patch of the adhesive facing inward. Following this pattern would make the entire process of wrapping the hands convenient & easier. It does not matter whether you start by just taking the wrap rolled around the hands’ back portion or even underneath them. In the end, if you manage to wrap up your wrist and every finger, your both hands would remain completely secure.

2. Slipping the wrap from your hands and then secure the same to the knuckles – For this, you need to wrap your hands carefully by holding all the layers properly so that the wrap does not fall apart under any circumstances. You would have to set a pad on the hand’s back and then pinch this in a proper place with the help of the thumb. After this, you need to collect the remaining fabric’s roll with your hand. You need to wrap this underneath the hand between the index finger and thumb and on top of the pad for securing this in the right place. The best way is to wrap around your hand three times for securing the pad on the knuckles. You should necessarily avoid wrapping your thumb at this point. For now, you need it free, so you have relatively better freedom for movement. You need to ensure that the Muay Thai hand wraps feel snug on the hands all the time. If this feels very loose or very tight, you need to unroll the same and then start again.

3. Crossing the Muay Thai hand wraps down & around the wrist three times – For this, you need to move your thumb sideways. Then, you need to bring your wrap in a diagonal position down in between the index finger and thumb to the edge of your wrist on the back of your hand. Then finish off protecting the wrist by properly wrapping the same up snugly. You are required to hold your wrist straight as you wrap the same. Wrapping the wrist when this is crooked majorly increases your overall chances of badly injuring the same. You would preferably require holding the wrist straight when you’re wrapping the same.
