CNC is an abbreviation used for Computer Numerical Control. These machines are operated and controlled fully by computers, freeing up a lot of labor power. The machines are controlled by means of program commands which are stored in a medium such as a computer hard drive or some other storage device.
There are two kinds of programs which are used in CNC Manufacturing machines:
Computer Aided Design:
By this type of program the computer systems create, analyze, modifies, and even corrects the design of a machine. The CAD software system or the Computer Aided Design system greatly increases the productivity of the manufacturing unit. CAD also improves the efficiency of the machine. Vector bases drawings and Raster graphics are employed by the CAD systems. It is specially suited in the formation of curves, surfaces and in the designing of 2D and 3D images.
Computer aided manufacturing:
CAM, or computer aided manufacturing, denotes the ability of the machines to use or modify the component tools to manufacture the required product. Additionally it plans, stores information and manages the manufacturing operation automatically with minimum human intervention. The advantage in employing CAM is in manufacturing the products faster. Other advantages of CAM are production of products with consistency in quality and dimensions.
CAD and CAM are increasingly being implemented into CNC Manufacturing machines to give it the advantages of both.

There are numerous advantages in employing a CNC machine to do all the work:
- These can work continuously 24/7 for every day of the year and have low maintenance cost. So one can deduce that these are very cost effective products.
- The CNC manufacturing machines are programmed with a particular machine part design, it can manufacture it as many times as required, and giving the same high quality results consistently every time.
- A huge advantage for the factory owners and managers of companies is that CNC machines do not require highly skilled people to function them. These can be programmed and worked by personnel who are not skilled. Milling machine is the simplest of CNC Manufacturing machines and can be handled easily.
- People can be trained effectively and fast by means of specific training software, which simulates the CNC machine work environment. These software’s are like computer simulation games, the personnel are gradually made adept in handling the machines. It saves a lot of money and time.
- CNC Manufacturing machines are capable of making machine parts and components which are impossible to make by manually operated machines. This is because these are programmed with very advanced software which enables it in duplicating work multiple times with the same consistency. This is something that is not possible even if you have a skilled operator working on manual machines.
- A huge advantage is that these machines enable the user to design a component, tool or part. It thus encourages a great deal of creativity. The user can make a prototype, cancel and edit it multiple times before commanding the machine to start manufacturing it. This saves the manufacturer a lot time, materials and money.
- In case of manually operated CNC Manufacturing models, multiple people are needed for the manufacturing process. In the case of CNC manufacturing machinery, one person is more than enough to operate it. All one needs to do is to feed in the program, the design and give appropriate commands. The machine takes care of the rest.
- Lastly, the engineer operating the machine can make the same tool or component many times. In other words. It can be duplicated as many times as the need be.
